Medical uses of BOTOX

Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin A known best as a wrinkle treatment but it also has medical uses. The following medical conditions are able to be treated by Dr Danielle Waxman, accredited doctor of NZSCM.

Botox injections can be used to prevent chronic migraines, especially if other treatments are not effective, not well tolerated or cause too many side effects.

Botulinum toxin is a treatment option for excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis. It works by blocking signals the brain sends to the sweat glands. Botox injections are given in affected areas such as the armpits, hands, feet or face. The results of the procedure can last up to eight months.

Botulinum toxin is used to decrease spasticity related to Multiple Sclerosis and other neurological conditions. It helps by stopping certain muscles contracting or twitching when the person doesn’t want them to. For neck spasms, Botulinum toxin is highly effective in relieving pain and returning normal neck movement and range. With Blepharospasm Botulinum Toxin therapy helps to reduce eye muscle spasms.

This condition causes drooping of one side of a person’s face because of nerve problems ,these effects usually lasting some months. However,Botox injections may be used in long term Bell’s Palsy to relax muscles that have become too tight or to help reduce unwanted facial muscle movements/twitching.

Botulinum toxin is used as an alternative treatment for TMJ disorders and associated jaw tension and pain. When injected into facial muscles afflicted with soreness and discomfort,it relieves TMJ and jaw tension for many patients. The injections often eliminate headaches resulting from teeth grinding which can lead to lock jaw.

There is evidence to suggest that Botulinum toxin can be used as an alternative treatment for depression. This is because facial expressions are part of the circuit of the brain related to mood.

Fear, anger and sadness all go through this muscle between the eyebrows where frown lines appear. Botulinum toxin basically inhibits the muscle and calms it down so that it becomes more difficult to feel those negative emotions.
